5 ring roads are currently under development as part of a large-scale metropolis inter-linking project designed to enhance traffic flow and connectivity across the city. The southernmost ring road will feature the upcoming Orange Gate tunnel, creating a seamless connection between the Freeway and Coastal Road at Marine Drive.

The next three ring roads will serve as key connectors between south Mumbai and its suburbs, linking Mumbai with Thane, and extending the city’s connectivity to Palghar and Alibaug.

Virar-Alibaug Corridor: A Future Prospect

The northernmost ring road, part of the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor, is still in the planning stage and may take longer to come to fruition. However, once completed, it is expected to significantly improve access between the northernmost suburbs and coastal areas.

Addressing Traffic Congestion

The development of these ring roads is aimed at alleviating the existing traffic congestion within Mumbai's internal road networks by providing alternative circular routes for commuters. One of the major benefits of the new ring roads is the inclusion of dedicated bus lanes and bus stops, similar to those being implemented on the Coastal Road. This will offer smoother and faster public transport options that have been difficult to establish on the city's current roads.

Key Infrastructure Enhancements in Thane and Beyond

Ring roads connecting Mumbai with Thane are expected to play a pivotal role in decongesting internal roads. Projects like the extension of the Eastern Freeway, the construction of the Thane Coastal Road, and developments along Ghodbunder Road are crucial components that will enhance connectivity between Mumbai’s northern areas and Thane.

Long-Term Benefits with Some Challenges

The concept of ring roads is widely seen as beneficial for the city's long-term traffic management. However, there are concerns about the lack of cohesive planning for interconnectivity between various road infrastructures, which could potentially lead to bottlenecks in certain areas.
