The Gopalakrishna Gokhale Bridge, connecting Andheri East and West, is progressing rapidly and is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2024. The work to link this bridge to the C.D. Barfiwala Flyover is underway, adhering to the set timeline. Municipal officials, along with technical advisors from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), are closely monitoring the project.

Elevation and Integration of Barfiwala Flyover

The process to elevate and connect the Barfiwala Flyover to the newly constructed Gokhale Bridge began on April 14, 2024. The methodology and plan for raising the Barfiwala Flyover were designed by IIT and VJTI. VJTI developed the procedure, and IIT reviewed it, suggesting improvements. The implementation of this revised method is being carried out under VJTI's supervision.

Methodology for Bridge Integration

The final two girders of the Barfiwala Flyover, P9 to P10 and P10 to P11, need to be separated. This involves controlled RCC joint demolition at pillars PA and P10, ensuring no structural damage.

Girders P9 to P10 and P10 to P11 will be lifted using a synchronized system to match the level of the Gokhale Bridge. Once aligned, the joints will be concreted again to ensure stability. New bearings and connecting joints will be installed.

Progress of the Integration Work

The level of the Barfiwala Flyover at pillar P10 was proposed to be raised by approximately 750 mm. This adjustment has been completed. At pillar P11, the proposed level raise was approximately 1,350 mm. Around 1,250 mm of this has been achieved, with the remaining 100 mm expected to be aligned within the next two to three days.

The new bearings have been procured and tested on May 27, and will be brought to the project site immediately.

Remaining work, including RCC concreting at P9, P10, and P11, and installation of new bearings, is scheduled to be completed by June 5. The project will conclude after the concrete curing process.
