Court-Ordered Demolition Leaves Over 50 Families Homeless in Nalasopara

In compliance with a Bombay High Court directive, 41 illegal buildings in Nalasopara East’s Agrawal Nagari, built on 30 acres of reserved land, are being demolished. The first phase of the operation rendered over 50 families homeless as municipal authorities cleared seven buildings despite protests from residents.

Massive Demolition Drive Underway

In a major action on 28th November 2024 morning, municipal authorities in Nalasopara East deployed bulldozers to demolish seven of 41 illegal structures in Agrawal Nagari. Built on land reserved for a dumping ground and sewage treatment plant (STP), the buildings were deemed illegal by the Bombay High Court.

Families Witness Homes Reduced to Rubble

Amidst heavy police presence, several families were forced to vacate their homes. Emotional residents gathered their belongings as they watched their homes being razed. Despite resistance, over 50 families were left homeless on the first day of the operation.

Supreme Court Appeal Yields No Relief

The land in question, spanning 30 acres, was reserved for civic infrastructure. The 41 buildings, constructed before 2006, housed over 3,000 families. After the Bombay High Court declared the buildings illegal and ordered their demolition, residents appealed to the Supreme Court, but their plea was rejected.

Court’s Orders Being Enforced

Municipal officials stated that the demolition process is following High Court orders. In the first phase, seven buildings have been taken down, with appeals to remaining residents to vacate their homes promptly to avoid further distress.
