INR 638 cr Flyover: Eastern Freeway to Grant Road
In Mumbai, the BMC has issued bids for the building of an elevated road between Orange Gate (where the Eastern Freeway starts in south Mumbai) and Grant Road in February 2023.
According to city authorities, the flyover would drastically reduce the travel time between Grant Road and other districts of south Mumbai to the eastern suburbs, from almost one hour during peak traffic to only six minutes.
The planned flyover above the motorway is projected to cost INR 638 crore.
Additional municipal commissioner P Velrasu said that the duration of the project is anticipated to exceed three years. "After the completion of the bid procedure in one and a half months, the work order will be issued. On that day, we want to commence construction "he remarked. The motorway offers continuous access from the eastern portion of south Bombay to Ghatkopar, with entrance and exit ramps along the route. The new flyover will link the western section of south Mumbai to the Freeway.
According to municipal authorities, the current commuting distance and peak-hour travel time by road from the Grant Road area to the Orange Gate Freeway (along P D'Mello Road) is 5.6 kilometres and fifty minutes.
The proposed alignment of the elevated roadway is as follows: Eastern Freeway (Orange Gate), J Rathod Marg, Hancock Bridge, Ramchandra Bhatt Marg (Over JJ Flyover), MS Ali Road, Frere Bridge East, and Patthe Bapurao Marg to Diana Talkies Marg (in Grant Road). The alignment passes through densely populated regions. The flyover will be supported by pillars along existing highways.
Existing utility services, such as watermains, electricity supply cables, sewage lines, and subterranean storm water drains, must be rerouted in order to make land accessible for foundation construction.
There is no doubt that the real estate market in Grant Road as well as the entire belt of South Central Mumbai will be positively impacted by this new infrastructure development.
