The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the building of a cable-stayed flyover to improve traffic connectivity between the western suburbs of Versova, Malad, and Marve in Mumbai.

Crossing the Versova Creek, the bridge will begin from the Versova jetty and end at the Madh island jetty's adjacent pier.

Let us understand that if this proposed cable-stayed flyover were come into existence, how would actually impact the overall real estate market in versova and also the madh property market.

A sneak peak at the project: This flyover will connect Versova jetty to Madh island.

The bridge will traverse the Versova Creek between the Versova jetty and the Madh island jetty.

This project's primary objective is to improve road connectivity between the western suburbs' Versova, Malad, and Marve areas, which are now divided by stretches of mangroves, mudflats, and streams. This bridge will shorten the travel time between Versova and Madh island to around 10 minutes. Currently, traversing SV Road and Link Road takes at least one hour. During rush hour, travel time may surpass two hours.

Possible Impacts & Importance

This project will improve road access to the most remote western suburbs. Due to the absence of a direct road network between Versova and Madh, the majority of people depend on a boat service.

The bridge will result in uninterrupted movement 365 days per year. Due to the fact that ferry services are often unusable during the monsoon, travellers must go via Malad by bus, taxi, or local train, which greatly lengthens their journey.

The bridge will also play a significant role in strengthening the economy of the Madh and Marve area, which is mostly populated by fishermen who go by boat to the fish markets in the Andheri and Dadar districts. This bridge will expand their travel options, hence enhancing connectivity.

With the forthcoming Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) and the forthcoming Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) projects, this flyover will provide a smooth corridor for north-south traffic travelling from the western suburbs' most distant point to the island city or vice versa.

Present status:

The BMC has chosen a consultant for this project in 2020, and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a study of the mangroves have just been completed.

The BMC has submitted documentation and a design for the final alignment of this bridge to the Maharashtra Coastal Zoning Management Authority (MCZMA) for final clearance of this project and is now awaiting permission.

The city officials anticipate issuing a call for bids after the issuance of a clearance certificate within the next two months.

The cost of this bridge joing versova and Madh would be around Rs 400 Crores

Predicted duration of construction: twelve months (excluding monsoon) from the day the work order is issued.

The proposed Versova-Madh bridge is designed to provide an essential link between the islands of Versova and Madh, and with the completion date of the coastal road swiftly approaching, this bridge is desperately needed. It will not only improve traffic flow, but also save tens of thousands of Mumbai residents daily time, gasoline, and money.
