A Partial Solution for Malad's Traffic Congestion

After more than two and a half years of construction, a section of the Mith Chowky flyover in Malad, running from west to east, will open to motorists on Sunday, October 6th, 2024. This partial opening is expected to significantly ease the notorious traffic bottleneck at the junction beneath the bridge, especially for vehicles traveling from Marve and Malwani towards Malad railway station.

However, heavy vehicles will not be permitted, as the Metro 2A line runs above the flyover.

Relief from Traffic, But Work Continues

The ongoing construction has caused prolonged traffic congestion in the area, and the opening of this new section is seen as a relief for daily commuters. Although this portion of the flyover will help reduce travel time, particularly during peak hours when the Mith Chowky junction currently takes 20 minutes to navigate, the full relief is yet to come. Work on the section connecting to Link Road is incomplete and is scheduled to finish by December 2024.

Flyover Design and Project Scope

The Mith Chowky flyover spans 800 meters and features a 'T-shaped' design. The eastern arm of the bridge begins at Girdhar Park, passing above Malad Creek and the heavily congested Mith Chowky junction. Its landing is located near St. Joseph’s School, allowing motorists to travel further towards Malad station and the Western Express Highway (WEH). Additionally, another arm of the flyover is planned to extend southward from the main carriageway.

Key Facts and Figures:

  • Bridge Length: 800 meters
  • Estimated Project Cost: Rs 55 crore
  • Opening Date for West-East Section: October 6th, 2024
  • Completion Date for Link Road Section: Expected by December 2024
  • Restricted Access: No heavy vehicles (due to Metro 2A line)
  • Inauguration by: BJP MP Piyush Goyal
  • Congested Areas to Benefit: Marve, Malwani, Mith Chowky Junction
  • Peak Hour Travel Time Reduction: Currently 20 minutes at Mith Chowky junction.

With the rising population in surrounding areas like Charkop and Malwani, the completion of the Mith Chowky flyover will be a crucial development in easing traffic congestion for Mumbai’s commuters.
