Mumbai: Mumbai’s first Metro line, the 12-kilometre Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, celebrates 10 years of commercial service since its launch on June 8, 2014.

Milestone Achievement

A spokesperson from Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd stated that Mumbai Metro One has successfully completed 11 lakh trips with more than 99% punctuality since it began operations a decade ago.

Connecting the City

The Metro Line 1 corridor features 12 stations, starting from Versova in the western suburbs and concluding at Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs. Over the past 10 years, the 16 trains of Metro 1 have collectively traveled nearly 12.6 crore km, averaging around 7.9 lakh km per train.

Facilitating Daily Commutes

Traversing the bustling areas of Andheri and Ghatkopar, the Metro line connects major junctions such as Andheri station on Western Railway (WR) and Ghatkopar station on Central Railway (CR). Currently, the line accommodates approximately 4.5 lakh commuters on weekdays, operating 418 trips daily, with service intervals of about 3.5 minutes during peak hours and 7 minutes during off-peak hours.

Engineering Excellence

The elevated design of the line required innovative construction techniques to minimize disruption to the existing urban landscape. Despite these challenges, the project was completed successfully.

Preferred Alternative for Commuters

Metro 1 serves as an alternative to the overcrowded local trains and slow-moving road traffic. Its punctuality and frequency have made it a preferred choice for many, reducing the average travel time between Versova and Ghatkopar to about 21 minutes compared with more than an hour by road during peak hours, according to a commuter.

The success of Mumbai Metro Line 1 highlights its critical role in easing daily commutes and improving the overall transportation landscape of the city.
