Mumbai:

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced that the Sewri-Worli connector will be open for traffic by December 2025. Additionally, 37km of new Metro lines will be commissioned within this financial year.

Metro Network Expansion

In his budget speech, Pawar mentioned that Metro lines spanning 449km have been sanctioned across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, with 127km already operational. He stated that another 37km of Metro lines will become operational this financial year, including:

  • Metro 3 Corridor: 32.5km long, with Phase I (Aarey-BKC) opening by September and the remainder till Cuffe Parade by December.
  • Pune Metro Line: A 3.7km line from Civil Court to Swargate will also be inaugurated.

Sewri-Worli Link Progress

Pawar indicated that work on the Sewri-Worli link road under the Sewri-Nhava Sheva project is 57% complete, with an expected completion date of December 2025. This project is anticipated to handle 15% of the traffic on MTHL, reducing travel time between the east and west coasts from 40-60 minutes to just 10 minutes.

Thane Coastal Road Project

The INR 3,364 crore Thane coastal road project, spanning 13.45km from Balkum to Gaimukh, is expected to be completed by May 2028.

Key features include:

  • Six Lanes: Designed to accommodate traffic heading towards Gujarat, Nashik, Bhiwandi, and parts of northern India.
  • Strategic Importance: The road will serve as an alternative connector between NH3, Old Agra Road, SH-4, and the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor.
  • An official stated that the coastal road project was initially part of TMC's development plan but was later taken over by MMRDA due to the need for multiple permissions and a rising budget.

No Mention of Oval Marina Project

In the latest state budget, there was no mention of the oval marina planned between Radio Club and the Gateway of India. The previous budget had allocated INR 162.2 crore for this project, which aimed to handle two lakh passengers and facilitate water transport between these locations.
