The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an invitation to bid for the construction of two underground tunnels for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. The project will provide an east-west traffic corridor linking Mulund in the eastern suburbs to Goregaon in the western suburbs. Currently, there is no direct connection between these regions, therefore commuters must detour through Ghodbunder Road in Thane or Powai. Both of these routes remain congested during rush hour.

BMC will construct a twin tunnel and a box tunnel under Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Film City as part of the GMLR. Each twin tunnel will be 4.7 km in length, while the box tunnel will measure 1.6 km.

The current bid for tunnel construction is anticipated to cost 6,322 crore, which is a 35% increase over the previous bid. The expected cost of the project in 2020 was 4,700 crores. Only the provisions have been rewritten; the rest of the technical specifications of the new bid are identical to those of the previous one. Each tunnel will have a diameter of around 13 metres and a depth of between 20 and 160 metres.
