Boosting Connectivity Between MTHL and Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that the Rs 1,100 crore elevated corridor project aimed at enhancing connectivity between the newly commissioned Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to be completed by February 2027.Infrastructure Expansion Across Key Junctions
The project includes two elevated corridors-one extending from the Chirle end of MTHL to Gavan Phata and another linking Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The initiative is expected to significantly improve traffic dispersal and alleviate congestion at major junctions.Six-Lane Elevated Corridors to Ease Congestion
The development plan features a six-lane elevated corridor over the JNPT–Panvel National Highway (NH-348) between Chirle and Gavan Phata, along with service road reconstruction. A similar six-lane elevated corridor will be constructed along the Old Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH-48) in Raigad district, where NH-48 will also be widened to six lanes.Transforming Regional Traffic Flow
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, described the project as transformative, indicating that it would redefine regional connectivity and mitigate congestion, particularly on NH-348. He noted that integrating Atal Setu with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway would ensure efficient traffic movement and reduce bottlenecks at critical points. NH-348, which accommodates a substantial volume of multi-axle container traffic from JNPT, is expected to experience significant relief.Project Execution and Current Progress
The construction, awarded to Gawar Construction Ltd for Rs 1,102.75 crore, is progressing with excavation work currently underway. The initiative marks a crucial phase in improving infrastructure and ensuring seamless transportation between Mumbai and Pune.Enhancing Mobility and Economic Growth
Mukherjee emphasized that the elevated corridor would revolutionize the way people and businesses commute between Mumbai and Pune. The improved connectivity would allow professionals to reside in Pune while working in Mumbai, thereby enhancing economic opportunities and overall quality of life.Infrastructure Details and Economic Impact
With a combined length of 4,958 meters in the Chirle section and 1,700 meters in the Palaspe section, the elevated corridors aim to streamline traffic flow, enhance accessibility, and boost economic activity across the region.News Disclaimer: This article is based on information provided by official sources and industry reports.
