GIFT City is on the fast track to becoming an international sports hub, with ambitious plans to host a Formula 1 (F1) motor racing circuit within its bustling International Finance Centre (IFC). Alongside eyeing a spot for the 2036 Olympics, GIFT City's journey to global fame is gaining speed, as top global race track designers converge in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, to craft a master plan for the F1 circuit.

Architects of Speed

The race to design GIFT City's circuit has attracted the crème de la crème of the racing world, including Hermann Tilke from Germany, renowned for the Buddh International and Las Vegas circuits; Italy's Jarno Zaffelli, famed for the Zandvoort and Singapore circuits; and Britain's Clive Bowen, the mastermind behind the UK's Silverstone circuit. These luminaries are competing to create a track that resonates with the local culture and landscape, with evaluations led by the Sports Authority of Gujarat.

Economic and Cultural Impact

With an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore, the project is seen as a catalyst for economic growth and increased global visibility for India. The involvement of top-tier firms like KPMG, PwC, and Nangia Anderson, alongside guidance from former Indian F1 racer Karun Chandhok, underscores the project's significance.

A Circuit Beyond Racing

According to Narain Karthikeyan, another esteemed Indian F1 racer, the proposed GIFT City circuit may resemble Singapore's street circuit, offering a blend of urban architecture and racing thrill, operational year-round. This approach not only promotes motorsport but also positions GIFT City as a unique global destination.

Reviving India's F1 Legacy

The initiative reflects a renewed effort to embed India in the F1 calendar, overcoming past challenges like those faced by the Buddh International circuit. With F1's growing global fanbase and the strategic location of GIFT City near Ahmedabad and its airport, the project holds the promise of transforming the area into a distinguished sports destination.
