The Indian Cabinet has greenlit a transformative set of tenancy regulations aimed at streamlining the rental ecosystem within select Union Territories.

This move, encompassing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu, is set to usher in an era of transparency and accountability in property rentals.

Announced on October 4, these regulations - the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tenancy Regulation, 2023; the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Tenancy Regulation, 2023; and the Lakshadweep Tenancy Regulation, 2023 - have been sanctioned under Article 240 of the Constitution. This article empowers the president to frame regulations specific to Union Territories.

A government statement elaborated on the potential impact of these regulations, highlighting their role in invigorating private investments in the rental sector. The move is anticipated to bolster the availability of rental housing across various societal segments, catering to migrants, professionals, students, and both formal and informal sector workers. Furthermore, it's a stride towards the formalization of the rental market, ensuring it's vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive.

In essence, these regulations are poised to harmonize the relationship between landlords and tenants, ensuring both parties' rights are safeguarded while fostering a transparent rental environment in these territories.
