Mumbai is set to establish a state-of-the-art inter-state parking hub on the grounds of the now-defunct Dahisar toll naka. With this project, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) aims to provide parking space for vehicles coming from outside the city, helping to ease traffic congestion within Mumbai.

Strategic Solution for Parking Challenges

With the cessation of toll collection since 2017, the MCGM has been seeking new revenue streams. They have now decided to repurpose the 24,628 square meters of land at the Dahisar toll naka for the parking hub. A tender has been issued, and the project is expected to be finalized within 1-1.5 months. The goal is to kickstart construction by the beginning of the new year, offering parking for 450 cars and 1,700 two-wheelers. The estimated project cost is a substantial ₹1,481 crores.

Optimizing Idle Land Post-Toll Closure

Since both Dahisar and Mankhurd toll nakas were closed, the vast available land has remained unused. Dahisar’s land covers 24,628 square meters, and Mankhurd boasts 29,774 square meters. Repurposing these areas for facilities, including parking, aligns with the city’s efforts to reduce the influx of vehicles into central Mumbai. This will also ease traffic congestion in and around the city by ensuring that vehicles from other states and regions park outside the main metropolitan area.

Project Highlights

450 Car Parking and 1,700 Two-Wheeler Parking Spaces Estimated Project Cost: ₹1,481 Crores Parking Hub with 15-Floor Building, Underground Parking Four Floors Dedicated to Parking, the Rest for Offices Adjoining 14-15 Storey Hotel and Food Plaza

Alleviating Mumbai’s Traffic Issues

This parking hub is designed to tackle several challenges. Vehicles, especially private ones coming from outside Maharashtra, will be required to stop at this hub. With increased footfall from across the country, the hub will also provide a range of essential services to passengers and drivers alike. The MCGM is hopeful that this initiative will significantly reduce traffic congestion, parking shortages, and pollution.

Vehicle Survey in Mumbai

According to surveys conducted by the MCGM, over 3,500 long-distance buses enter Mumbai daily via toll nakas. This influx of vehicles leads to severe traffic congestion, exacerbating the city's parking problems and contributing to increased pollution levels. The new parking hub is expected to intercept this traffic flow, reducing the pressure on the city’s transport infrastructure.

Comprehensive Facilities

The Dahisar hub is planned as a 15-storey building with underground parking, in addition to a four-floor parking facility. Above these, office spaces will be created to fully utilize the structure. Furthermore, adjacent to the hub will be a hotel and food plaza, offering multiple conveniences for travelers. MCGM will also ensure connectivity to BEST buses, metro lines, and local trains to make this hub accessible and convenient for all.
