Revamping State Housing Policy to Benefit Mill Workers, Dabbawallas & Common Citizens
Thane: Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has set an ambitious goal of constructing eight lakh homes over the next five years, with a sharp focus on affordable and rental housing for diverse segments, including mill workers and Mumbai’s dabbawallas.
This announcement was made during a MHADA-sponsored event in Thane, where over 2,100 flats and 117 plots were allocated through an advanced lottery system.
Widespread Trust in MHADA’s Housing Initiatives
With over 31,000 applications received for the available flats and plots in the Konkan region, public participation in MHADA’s schemes remains strong. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enhancing transparency in the allocation process while ensuring strict quality control in construction.
Developers engaged in these projects have been instructed to maintain high standards, reinforcing the government’s dedication to reliable and sustainable housing solutions.
State Push to Revive Stalled Redevelopment Projects
Recognizing the large number of stalled redevelopment projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the state government has urged financially strong agencies—including SRA, MHADA, MMRDA, CIDCO, and BMC—to take over these incomplete projects and drive them to completion. This move is expected to reignite urban redevelopment efforts and offer relief to residents awaiting possession.
MHADA’s Legacy in Housing Development
As the largest housing authority in India, MHADA has delivered over seven lakh homes across Maharashtra, including two lakh in Mumbai alone. Nationwide, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)—launched in 2015—has sanctioned over 112.46 lakh homes, with 90.36 lakh already completed. The central government has committed ₹2 lakh crore towards this initiative, with ₹1.6 lakh crore already disbursed.
With an increased focus on affordable housing, policy modifications, and transparent processes, MHADA continues to play a pivotal role in urban housing development and remains instrumental in addressing the housing needs of Maharashtra’s growing population.
