Republic Day to Mark New Milestone for Coastal Road
On January 26, the Coastal Road project will unveil its second connector arm linking to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Additionally, three new interchange arms at Worli, connecting Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk, Bandra, and Prabhadevi, will become operational. The promenade and public underpasses are expected to open by February, offering much-needed recreational spaces.
Phased Openings Amid Delays
Key sections of the Coastal Road have been inaugurated in phases. The southbound stretch from Worli to Marine Drive opened in March 2024, followed by the northbound section to Haji Ali in June. By September, the first connector arm to the Sea Link was operational. However, much remains unfinished, including five interchange arms at Worli, two at Haji Ali, and car parks at Breach Candy and Haji Ali.
Delayed Deadlines Push Completion to 2026
Originally slated for 2022, the Rs 14,000-crore project has faced legal challenges, Covid-19 lockdowns, and design revisions, pushing the deadline to 2026. Officials cite these obstacles as reasons for phased openings, which continue to improve connectivity along Mumbai's western shoreline.
Haji Ali Parking Facility to Double Capacity
The BMC has revised plans for the Haji Ali parking lot, expanding it from two to four storeys. The updated facility will now accommodate 1,069 cars and 70 buses, anticipating increased footfall from the Coastal Road's integration with the Racecourse open spaces.
