Atal Setu, India's Longest Sea Bridge is an ode to the spirit of Mumbai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, now open for public commute. This monumental six-lane sea bridge, stretching 21.8 km with 16.5 km over the sea, is a testament to India's infrastructural prowess.
Developed at a cost of ₹18,000 crore, MTHL originates from Sewri in Mumbai and terminates at Nhava Sheva in Raigad district. The bridge not only symbolizes India's developmental strides but also reduces the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai commute from two hours to a mere 20 minutes.
Impact on Urban Mobility and Real Estate
The bridge's completion is anticipated to revolutionize mobility in Mumbai, connecting the city with Navi Mumbai more efficiently. While the MTHL is expected to handle about 70,000 vehicles daily, its immediate impact on Mumbai's real estate market, as analyzed by Knight Frank India, may be minimal. However, the long-term benefits, including improved connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, and reduced travel time to Pune, Goa, and South India, are significant.
Speed Limits and Vehicle Regulations on Atal Setu
The maximum speed limit for four-wheelers on the MTHL is set at 100 kmph, with restrictions to 40 kmph on the bridge's ascent and descent. However, motorbikes, auto-rickshaws, tractors, mopeds, three-wheelers, and slow-moving vehicles are not permitted on the sea bridge. Multi-axle heavy vehicles, trucks, and buses heading towards Mumbai will have designated routes, avoiding the Eastern Freeway.
A Vision for the Future: PM Modi's Address
In his address, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the project's role in transforming locations into prime choices for buyers. He lauded the State leadership for completing the MTHL on time despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude towards the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for his contributions to the project. Furthermore, he highlighted other significant infrastructural developments under his government, such as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, Bogibeel Bridge, and Atal Tunnel.
MTHL's Historical Journey
The foundation stone for the MTHL was laid by Prime Minister Modi in December 2016, and construction began in 2018. Despite an eight-month delay due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the project stands completed, marking a significant milestone in India's infrastructural achievements.
