The Municipal Corporation of Mumbai is set to transform travel in South Mumbai with the new Eastern Freeway project, extending from Orange Gate to Grant Road. This 5.5-kilometer route promises to drastically cut travel times and improve connectivity. J. Kumar Infra has been selected to bring this vision to life, with the project expected to reach completion in three and a half years.

Route and Benefits

Starting at Orange Gate on P. D'Mello Road and ending at Grant Road station, the Eastern Freeway currently takes 30 to 50 minutes to traverse. The new freeway will reduce this to a mere 6 to 7 minutes. Running close to the Hancock Bridge and through Mumbai Port Trust's area, the route has been optimized post-receiving necessary clearances, ensuring a smooth construction phase ahead.

Enhanced Connectivity

Once operational, the freeway will streamline traffic flow on major arteries such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Road, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, and the Eastern Express Highway, easing congestion around key nodes like Grant Road and Mumbai Central.

Budget Adjustments

Initially budgeted at 662.42 crore rupees, the project cost has now doubled to 1,330 crore rupees. This increase accommodates essential modifications, ensuring that the freeway not only connects to the coastal road but also meets the evolving needs of Mumbai’s transport infrastructure.
