Reviving a Cultural Icon
After permanently closing its doors in 2016, Mumbai’s legendary Rhythm House at Kala Ghoda has found new life. The iconic music store, once a bustling hub for music lovers, has been acquired by Bhaane Retail, a subsidiary of Shahi Exports Pvt Ltd, for a reported INR 48 crore.
Founded by Anand Ahuja and Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Bhaane Group aims to preserve and rejuvenate the cultural spirit of this historic site.
A Complex Ownership History
Previously, Rhythm House was acquired by the now-fugitive diamond mogul Nirav Modi through his firm Firestar Diamond in 2017. The transaction occurred shortly before Modi defaulted on a colossal INR 6,500 crore loan from Punjab National Bank (PNB), leading to a swift flight from India and subsequent property seizures by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Since 2018, Rhythm House has been one of 21 Modi-linked properties attached by the ED.
Legacy and Memories: A Musical Haven for All
Established in 1948 by Sulaiman Nensy and later operated by the Curmally family, Rhythm House became synonymous with a diverse music collection and a unique shopping experience. The late Mehmood Curmally’s stewardship added a dynamic touch, welcoming an array of patrons—from Bollywood composers like Kalyanji-Anandji and Shammi Kapoor to international and local music legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Jethro Tull, Zakir Hussain, and AR Rahman. The store’s rich history is marked by these footprints, encapsulating the essence of Mumbai’s cultural history
