PMAY (Urban) is built for people living in urban centers across the world, including slum dwellers, to be affordable in terms of accommodation. It is anticipated that demand for slum houses will reach up to 18 million by 2022. Consequently, about 20 million affordable homes will be built according to the plan to meet the estimated supply of housing. The beneficiary families should not be the owners of any pucca house in any part of India to obtain financial help from the government under the PMAY Urban scheme.
The scheme encompasses the country's entire urban areas, including 4041 legislative towns with priority given to 500 Class I cities. That is going to be done in 3 stages.
There are four subcategories of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in urban cities: “In-situ” Slum Redevelopment (ISSR), Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), and Beneficiary-led individual house construction/enhancements (BLC). All 4041 cities, according to the 2011 census will be dealt with in three phases with an emphasis on 500 cities of Class I as follows:
Phase | Duration | Phase Details |
Phase I | April 2015 - March 2017 | To cover 100 Cities selected from States/UTs as per their willingness |
Phase II | April 2017 - March 2019 | To cover additional 200 Cities |
Phase III | April 2019 - March 2022 | To cover all other remaining Cities |
